Why I’ve Changed My Mind About Canva
My Original View
For a long time, I wasn’t a fan of Canva.
As a graphic designer who mostly works in Adobe software, it always felt too basic and limiting. The drag-and-drop templates and stock graphics made it seem like it was trying to replace proper design tools, and I didn’t really see where it fitted into professional design work.
But over time my view has changed a bit.
Not because Canva replaces professional software — it definitely doesn’t — but because I’ve realised it can actually be useful to speed up certain types of design tasks. Making it more time efficient for me and more cost-efficient for my customers.
Not Every Design Job Needs Adobe
The reality is that not every piece of design work needs to start from scratch in Illustrator or InDesign.
A lot of everyday design jobs are things like social media graphics, simple promotional posts, presentations, or quick marketing materials. They still need to look good and stay on brand, but they don’t always require a completely custom design process.
For that kind of work, Canva can save a lot of time.
Creating well-designed templates that can be reused for different posts or campaigns speeds up the production side of things and reduces the amount of repetitive work. It means less time spent on simple production tasks and more time available for the creative parts of a project.
Where It Falls Short
That said, I still don’t think Canva should be used for everything.
Things like logo design, brand identity development, and detailed vector work should still be done in Adobe Illustrator. Proper branding needs precision, flexibility, and control that template-based tools just don’t offer.
A Useful Tool — Just Not the Only One
So my view now is fairly simple: Canva is useful for quick, repeatable design tasks.
It’s not a replacement for professional design software, but it can be a helpful tool when used in the right way. And if it saves time on the basics and leaves more room for proper creative work, that’s a pretty good trade-off.
