Rebrand vs Refresh. What’s The Difference?

It’s a question I get asked a lot:

“Do we need a rebrand, or just a refresh?”

And honestly, the answer isn’t always as drastic as people think.

While the two terms get used interchangeably, they’re very different in practice — and choosing the right one can save you a lot of time (and budget).

What is a Brand Refresh?

A brand refresh is about refining what you already have.

You’re not throwing everything away — you’re improving it. Sharpening it. Bringing it up to where your business is today.

That might mean:

  • Tidying up your logo
  • Improving consistency across your brand
  • Updating colours, typography, or layouts
  • Clarifying your messaging

The key thing is this: your brand is still recognisable — just better executed.

Recent Example: Enviro Clear

With EnviroClear, the goal wasn’t to reinvent the business — it was to elevate the brand. Creating something more cohesive, more professional, and more aligned with the level they’re operating at.

Recent Example: Ground Truth Intelligence

Ground Truth Intelligence was a similar story. This was about refining and strengthening the existing identity — bringing more clarity and authority to how the brand shows up, without losing what was already there.

Recent Example: Chelmsford Private GPs

Chelmsford Private GPs is another great example of a refresh. The focus here was on creating a cleaner, more modern and trustworthy feel — something that reflects the quality of care while keeping the brand familiar.

What is a Rebrand?

A rebrand is a much bigger shift.

This is where you’re rethinking everything — your positioning, your audience, your identity, sometimes even your name.

It’s not just how you look, it’s who you are as a business.

You typically need a rebrand when:

  • Your business has changed direction
  • You’re targeting a completely different audience
  • Your current brand no longer reflects what you do

Example: Cahoot

Cahoot is a good example of a full rebrand. This involved building the brand from the ground up — creating a new identity, positioning, and overall direction that better reflects the business and where it’s going.

So… Which One Do You Need?

Here’s the simple way I explain it:

  • If your business is the same, but your brand feels outdated → Refresh
  • If your business has changed, and your brand no longer fits → Rebrand

Many businesses I work with fall into that first category.

They don’t need to start over — they just need to level up what they already have.

Final Thought

Your brand should reflect where your business is now — not where it was a few years ago.

If it doesn’t, that’s usually your sign something needs to change.
